about

Grasslands second LP features an eclectic Lo-Fi mix of genres and experiments recorded in strange places and with strange people. Each song was made in a spontaneous burst of creative excitement with a new song created, performed, filmed and recorded every day for a whole month. Tracks include: sea shanty hip-hop, a solo rave next to the Manchester Shipping Canal, Birdwatcher/kitchen utensil-fuelled punk, electro swing played in a storm on top of a hill in Stroud, ambient proggy slow-rock with added slide guitar, a binaural soundscape, and a Jeff Wayne styled Bladerunner soundtrack to a novel you’ve never read.

This version of ‘Gorilla Tactics’ is the main release and features over an hour of the best performances and songs from the month-long project. Many of the songs are edits, with a full multi-hour 31-track comprehensive version of ‘Gorilla Tactics’ to follow in a few months’ time.

Although it is an LP suffering a form of genre identity apocalypse, the frequent presence of the OP1 synthesizer and the Grasslands’ rig of samplers and beat boxes keeps things knitted together.

‘Gorilla Tactics’ also includes spontaneous collaborations with many Swindonian musicians including Jim Blair (Hip Route), Lauren Wallis (Spunking Octochoke), Adam Crosland and frequent Grasslands collaborators including Adrian Wallington (No Side Effects) and Marc Henley (SexJazz) amongst others. Grasslands’ attempts to play with as many friends as possible were particularly fitting, as the project was recorded in January 2020, mere weeks before the world would go on a normal life hiatus due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.

‘Gorilla Tactics’ will be released on September 3rd 2021 on Bandcamp for Bandcamp Friday, and will be available on other streaming platforms on 8th October.
