This Train 03:35
I’ve been waiting too long For some forgotten song To come back and catch my eye And jump on that big old ride I don’t know what I’m saying Everything’s gone wrong Their saying: get a job, get a new friend, get a new car. Get a new car You see I went on this train It was a bit of a pain You see Drifting by the lines Of the countryside Shutting down into my book Where nobody looks Don’t stare at me I won’t stare at you We’ll make a pact Just you and me Just for two Just for two You see I went on this train It was a bit of a pain You see I’m gonna travel proud From the north to the south With my guitar in hand We’ll rock the land Where’s my ticket? Where’s my band? Where’s my drummer? Where’d I get all this sand? All This sand You see I went on this train It was a bit of a pain For me I went on this train With you

He’s just an average guy Walking down the street And if you get in his way He’ll step on your feet Well he’s got the rhythm and the beat And if that’s not enough, well he’s also got teeth He’s a techno-superstar He lives in the 90s He’s a waste of space when it comes down to the 80s It’s just a medium feed That he needs to proceed And if that’s all you need in this E-machine Well it’s the bass line hitting home with the feet And if that’s all you need then he surely has to be... A techno-superstar He’s a techno-superstar He lives in the 90s He’s a waste of space when it comes down to the 80s

Hear Me 03:12

My flesh is old and withered My bones are thin a brittle I’ve lived my life and I’ve lived it well In a happy shower of sunshine Trying to avoid the rain Sing me a jolly tune Spin my a happy yarn Don’t be sad on my behalf I wouldn’t want you to I have loved and I have lost I have loved and never found I’ve had my go on this merry-go-round Trying to avoid the pain Sing me a jolly tune Spin my a happy yarn Don’t be sad on my behalf I wouldn’t want you to

On a nice sunny afternoon I like to Watch the tigers run around And when their finished with their daytime chores I will Chase those tigers down Can you hear them? Thumping in the shadows and chasing young widows through windows Can you feel them? Touching your reflection and sending little shivers down your spine On a wet and windy morning I like to Keep in touch with the gates And when I’ve given them a good oiling I will Swing them around some more Can you hear them? Squeaking through your ears until you’re almost in tears of fear Can you feel them? Rusting on your fingers and grabbing at your neighbours daughter They let me out from time to time
9.
I would like to see you in the morning Don’t know why I’m here All the places I’ve ever been Seem so far away from here But all these things passed I’m just glad to be with you We could travel the world together And I’d still love you I would like to see you on my own terms Those ghosts are so far gone All the lies I keep telling myself Will come back and haunt me one day But all my self-esteem has been left at home But one thing’s still true I’m just glad to be in your arms But in your eyes there is a reflection Of a day where we danced under the light of the stars One thing is always true I would like to see you in the morning

Flamenco Rita She go dancing with retards Every day of her big sad life She be finding the ties that bind Every day she looks out of the window They be screaming at her ‘hey Rita’ ‘What did you do with your old hair?’ ‘Do you keep it locked under the stairs?’ Then she gets really sad As she tries to hide from all the mad Then she goes and hides in her room And she feels the heat come over and she goes One for the blush Tornado mamba That’s what they call it when you go dancing But how am I suppose to be impressed By someone that looks such a mess One for the blush Indigo face paint That’s what you where when you go out It’s suppose to mask all the curves But all it does is kill people’s nerves One for the blush Ray-gun repulsor That’s what they need to get rid of you Super-ultra solar power Beamed down straight from the sun One for the blush
11.
Let me get something right inside We’re gonna be swinging the town tonight You got to say it to me, say it to you Everybody feels happy too That’s why I’ve been blind Seeing without eyes isn’t what it used to be But who cares, let’s go down to the trees You’ve got to hear the call, stand tall Everybody else is ready to fall That’s why I’ve been blind
12.
Why did you cage them? You must have had your reasons I saw one of them once Flying through the blue sky Without a care in the world The things I’ve heard Given me by my bird Can’t you just see when? This will all be in season I never saw one since But every day I watch the sky Without a hope and a prayer The things I’ve heard Given me by my bird The things I’ve heard Given me by my bird
13.
My mule is dead He got shot by a gun My mule is dead I don’t know where to get another one It’s no fun Walking without a mule My mule is dead I sent him for pet food My mule is dead I got a tidy sum for that ass It’s no fun Walking without a mule ‘Cus I need some plasters Especially for blisters ‘Cus mine are the size of a washing machine My mule is dead He got shot by a gun My mule is dead Dead, dead, dead, dead It’s no fun Walking without a mule
14.
You left me alone and nobody knows in the pouring rain You hang around with different people like you’re not the same Just because you’ve changed your hair, just once, doesn’t mean you’ve changed But in some funny way I feel that it’s a shame How did we pass each other by? Now the nights are cold, when I sit down and I prepare to play When you’re not there, then all I can think is a collage of fake Just when things were getting good, you decided it was time for a break But when you walk in the door it feels just like a drain How did we pass each other by? See you on the other side
15.
How many times must I sing the same fucking song? Until you realise what I’m trying to say Well me and Phil started a band And Quintessence, well it came hand in hand. Quintessence is dead, I shot it in the head Go and find a different band instead Now we’re gonna take these seeds and we’re gonna plant broadleaves. Now Phil’s lost in the woods somewhere He’s searching far and wide While I’m a worker at your local Bewise The people that saw us always said the same old things While all the people that knew us said all the wrong things Quintessence is dead, I shot it in the head Go and find a different band instead Now all the conifers are gone and I’ve lost my chainsaw Now we’re gonna take these seeds and we’re gonna plant broadleaves. Well there’s not much to say now Everything’s almost done Them’ oaks and them’ beeches are all calling to me I’d like to thank you for being so patient with us Now all that’s left is to say goodbye to Quintessence Good night y’all, Thank you Quintessence is dead, I shot it in the head Go and find a different band instead Now all the conifers are gone and I’ve lost my chainsaw Now we’re gonna take these seeds and we’re gonna plant broadleaves. Quintessence is dead, I shot it in the head Go and find a different band instead There should have been five members, but we’re the only two that stayed Quintessence is dead, I shot it in the head Go and find a different band instead

about

Destroy All Conifers is a pop record at heart with industrial pop/rock, folk, metal and electronic leanings, sometimes funny, sometimes melancholy and sometimes a bit weird. The album was recorded in Aberystwyth from 2001-2002.

Stand out songs from this 15 track album include the heavy ‘One For The Blush’ and ‘Hear Me’, the country styled ‘Walking Without a Mule’ and the electro-acoustic ‘See You On The Other Side’.

Quintessence were Tom Haynes and Phil White. We started playing together while at College in Staffordshire and between 1999-2001 we wrote lots of songs and went busking in random places.

Destroy All Conifers begins with upbeat enthusiasm and comes to a sombre close as it became evident that our little band/duet were soon to disband.

The album had a limited distribution, which involved me eagerly handing out copies while drunk and hiding them in random bushes in Aberystwyth.

One single was released ‘This Train’ which had a few B-sides.
The widest audience the album ever reached was being played over the speaker system in the discount clothing store Bewise, Aberystwyth (Rock On!).
