Forever Was A Long Time Ago

about

‘Forever was a long time ago’ is a swirly angst-filled folktronica track recorded live as part of Grasslands’ project to perform and record a spontaneous track each day for a month, the result of which will soon be released as a duo of LPs titled ‘Gorilla Tactics’.

The single represents the 17th day in the project and was recording using a circle of amps, and multiple vocal looping devices.

The ‘Gorilla Tactics’ LP includes a wide range of rough and ready sonic experiments in strange places including a drone track recorded on a mountain top in the Lake District, a solo rave next to the Manchester Shipping Canal, a Beatles-infused noise track on Albert Docks and a song played in a storm on top of the hills above Stroud.

‘Gorilla Tactics’ also includes spontaneous collaborations with many Swindonian musicians including Flour Babies, Jim Blair (Hip Route), Lauren Wallis (Spunking Octochoke), Adam Crosland and frequent Grasslands collaborators including Adrian Wallington (No Side Effects) and Marc Henley (SexJazz) amongst others. Grasslands’ attempts to play with as many friends as possible were particularly fitting, as the project was recorded in January 2020, mere weeks before the world would go on a normal life hiatus due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. One collaboration was even inspired by the virus moving through Wuhan, China; little did they know at the time that the next 2 years of human life would be defined by that event.

A wide range of instruments and setup experiments were used for solo performances recorded in Grasslands home studio ‘Neon Meadow’ including: a song created out of a photo; a song written on a Sony Playstation 1; a song created from some ‘hold music’; a binaural recording featuring a circle of amplifiers, various instruments and a microphone on a turntable; and a chaotic 25 minute solo jam featuring live looping of x2 guitars, various synths, vocals, drums and samples from all of the other 30 songs on the project.

‘Forever Is A Long Time Ago’ will be released August 6th 2021 while ‘Gorilla Tactics’ will be released on September 3rd 2021 and will feature a compilation of the best jams from the project. A full 31 track, multi-hour comprehensive edition of ‘Gorilla Tactics’ will be released later in the year.
