about

Let me take you back to 2002 and my proto-Grasslands band: Quintessence.

I wrote and recorded ‘This Train’ with my acoustic guitar and an Alesis SR 16 drum machine. The track also features on Quintessence LP ‘Destroy All Conifers’.

This was my first release and was mostly handed out and sold to friends when drunk in Aberystwyth. Quite a few copies were also left in bushes and sellotaped to lamp posts around town (they may still be in bushes right now).

Originally there were ‘blue’ and ‘red’ versions of the CD with slightly different track listings. All the computer files for these tracks have since disappeared, so I have remastered the master CDs. I have also added the tracks from both versions of the original CDs and included a recent rendition of the song by Grasslands in the form of the ‘Grasslands Acoustic Wonderment’.

At the very least you get to see how my live performances of the song have changed over the past 18 years.

The crescendo of ‘The Boy with the Detonator’ will likely blow up your speakers, and the outro of the ‘Blue Carrot Monster Mix’ is beautiful.
